Police Layoffs Could Come Again Monday

125 Cops Expected to Receive 30-Day Notice

Toledo Police are looking at 20 percent of its ranks reduced in about a month, if layoff notices go out again Monday as Mayor Mike Bell has publicly mentioned.

The Toledo Police Patrolmans Association narrowly defeated contract concessions 222-198 in voting last week. As a result, 125 police officers could receive pink slips this week, as city council considers tax and fee increases to help bridge what the Bell Administration now says is a $25 million budget deficit.

TPPA leaders had reached a tentative agreement calling for police officers to pay three percent more toward their pensions through the end of the year, and a deferrment of all police overtime pay until March 2011. In tandem, the concessions would have saved the city an estimated $2.4 million this year.

By contrast, Firefighters Local #92 ratified a similar set of concessions that will drop the deficit by more than $3 million.
