Lucas County Developmentally-Disabled Residents to Get Special Annual Boat Trip With Harbor View Yacht Club on Sunday, August 15

(Oregon, OH) -- Sunday will be a very special day for nearly 40 Lucas County developmentally-disabled adults from the Wiley Homes when they are treated to their annual river cruise and picnic by Harbor View Yacht Club.

The river cruise for the developmentally-disabled was rekindled in 2007 by Marie Cousino. At the time, Ms. Cousino was Entertainment Director for the Harbor View Yacht Club Auxiliary. She is still an active HVYC member, but has added the title International Satin Gavel President to her duties this year.

"This use to be an annual event," said Ms. Cousino. "We use to take MRDD residents on a trip from Wyandot, Michigan. In 2007 we decided to start it up again. We kept it local with the hopes of making it grow, getting more residents, and more boaters involved."

Starting at 10 a.m. Sunday, approximately 12 boats will take the nearly 40 developmentally-disabled residents from ten group homes, and their staff, for the trip along the Maumee River. The residents range in age from 33 - 90 years old. Following the trip, the yacht club and sponsors will treat the group to lunch at Harbor View.

Ms. Cousino, who also works as an LPN for the Wiley Homes, says that the residents keep asking about the trip.

"It is truly a special time every year for them. They look forward to this all year long. As soon as we are done, they wanted to go again. The joy and expression on their faces is priceless," she said.

Sponsors for this year's trip included: Perfect Sweep; Pepsi; Meldrum Mechanical; Happy Trails; Maumee Bay Marine Services; AB&B Ergonomics; Amy Tewers; Dave Smith; Harbor View Yacht Club; HVYC Auxiliary; HVYC Blue Gavel; HVYC Satin Gavel; 2010 Commodore Dean Reamsnyder and Lady Karla; Past Commodore Bob and Jean McKee; Past Commodore Brian and Marie Cousino; Buzz and Itty Bitty Johnson, as well as Larry and Kay Musil with HVYC Entertainment.

Participating boaters include Past Commodore Brian Cousino, Past Commodore Jeff Gartz, Past Commodore Gary Weaver, Past Commodore Chip Pastorek, Bob Taylor, Mike Wiseman, Steve Myer, Bob Reed, Laura Morgan, Doug Studyvin; Jeff Franky; and many other volunteers.
